Sarnia accepting nominations for Accessibility Awards

The City of Sarnia is hoping to see more nominations this year for the 12th annual Accessibility Awards.

The Sarnia Accessibility Advisory Committee will accept nominations until November 12 at 4 p.m.

Human Resources Manager Tammy Broer said they received nearly 20 nominations last year -- not nearly as much as they had hoped for.

"We're really hoping this year to get more nominations," Broer said. "That's part of why we reduced it to five categories because we felt that we maybe had too many categories last year and maybe they were too specific, so people didn't see the opportunity to nominate someone."

The five categories this year will recognize large and small businesses, individuals and organizations in the social service sector, and those who create opportunities for an accessible community. The Kevin Schenk Legacy Award will also be given to someone who has paved the way and inspired change within the community.

"We've really focused on the categories in making sure that they encompass all of the opportunities and all of the work that's being done out in the public," Broer said. "The accessibility committee works really hard to ensure that the categories highlight the different dimensions of accessibility, from physical space, innovative practices, and also encouraging others in our community to embrace accessibility as a priority."

Broer said personally, she's impressed with how much businesses and individuals care about making Sarnia more accessible.

"The Accessibility Awards represent more than just recognition," she said. "It's really an opportunity to celebrate the incredible impact that organizations, individuals, and businesses have on our community by fostering a more inclusive and accessible environment."

Details about nomination criteria can be found on the city's website.

A formal event will be held on December 3 to recognize the award recipients. The date is also recognized as International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
