Thanksgiving weekend marks final fall fair of the season

A Thanksgiving long weekend tradition returns to Brigden.

Gates open Friday, October 11 at the Brigden Fairgrounds for the 174th annual fall fair.

Spokesperson Dennis Robinson said there are 16 rides set up for the midway this year.

"Every type of ride I think imaginable," said Robinson. "Some games of chance and lots of different varieties of food."

New this year is a Corn Maze.

"When you come in to Brigden, if you're on 80 Highway six acres of corn has been planted and a maze has been set up," said Robinson.

Other highlights include the Great Canadian Lumberjacks, Pumpkin Catapult, Tractor Pulls and the parade at noon on Saturday.

Robinson said hundreds of volunteers work together to bring the annual fall tradition together to showcase not only Brigden and the fair, but the county as a whole.

"I think the (population) sign says between 400 and 500 people and we utilize 300 of them or more as volunteers to help set up for the last two weeks, hanging signs, hand wash stations, you name it to make the public safe to view all that we display."

The theme this year is 'Country Roots and Rubber Boots'.

"We're there to provide something that we are teaching people where their food actually comes from and hands on displays," said Robinson. "And seeing families enjoying time, coming back to Lambton County and to Brigden Fair to celebrate Thanksgiving, because we have a lot to be thankful for in this area."

Admission Friday is $5 until 5 p.m. and $20 after 5 p.m. for the Tractor Pull.

Saturday through Monday entry is $10 for adults, elementary school aged children get in free all weekend. Parking at the fairgrounds is also free.

The first recorded Brigden Fair took place in 1850. The Thanksgiving tradition was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
