Mexican citizens accused of entering U.S. illegally arrested

Three Mexican citizens were detained after they allegedly tried to enter the United States illegally by crossing the St. Clair River on Monday.

The Port Huron Police Department said it received reports on September 23 from the United States Coast Guard of three males crossing the river from Canada into the U.S, using a raft.

The coast guard said the individuals abandoned the raft near the mouth of the Black River.

"Officers responding to the scene observed the subjects carrying duffel bags and running northbound on Michigan Street near Grand River Avenue," said Assistant Chief Jeremy Young in a news release. "The three males were detained and subsequently turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol for illegal entry into the United States. All three individuals were identified as Mexican citizens."

The Port Huron Police Department is urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Further information, including charges, was not released.
