Local Peace Pole to be dedicated Saturday

A gathering is planned at the Rotary Peace Garden in Sarnia's Centennial Park on Saturday.

The Rotary Club of Sarnia Bluewaterland will be dedicating its Peace Pole on International Peace Day.

The monument, which declares the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in the language of the country where it is erected, was created in 1955 by Masahisa Goi.

Goi is the late founder of the world peace prayer movement, developed to transcend religious, ethnic and political boundaries to bring about peace through prayer.

Goi dedicated his life in service to humanity and the attainment of global peace and harmony after witnessing the devastation caused by World War II and the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.

Rotary members have dedicated more than 250,000 Peace Poles in parks and public spaces worldwide.

The ceremony, to be held at noon, is open to the public.
