Remembering those lost to overdose

Residents are invited to a memorial event Thursday evening along the city's waterfront.

Bluewater Health is hosting the gathering in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day which is held on August 31 every year.

The hospital said purple flowers and ribbons to commemorate those who have been lost to overdose and support individuals whose lives have been impacted, will be tied on the railing at Centennial Park.

Preliminary data released in Lambton Public Health's latest opioid bulletin for the month of July said there were 36 related deaths in 2023, compared with 32 in 2022.

Already this year, Lambton EMS has responded to over 170 calls for opioid related overdoses.

The event is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  at the MacPherson Fountain on Front Street.

Bluewater Health said naloxone kits and mental health addiction resources will also be available.
