Mike Bradley is asking Sarnia to be considered for a new treatment and social support hub.
At the recent Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference in Ottawa, the province announced $378 million in funding to support 19 facilities for individuals with mental health and substance abuse challenges.
Sarnia's mayor says such facilities are desperately needed right here.
"I'm simply putting on the record to the minister, we would like to be part of this, and certainly based on need, could use it right now," said Bradley.
He said hubs that bring together services regarding addictions, mental health, and housing are a step in the right direction as all these issues are linked.
"To me this is another opportunity," said Bradley. "There's not a lot of new hubs that are developing, but I think we can make the case for it based on unfortunately what's happening here with addictions and mental health. But it makes sense this direction, of trying to bring those services together for addictions and mental health and not treat them as isolated services and isolated issues, they're not."
Bradley has sent a request to the Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones for more details on the project and application process.
In the announcement, the minister said the government will shortly be seeking proposals from municipalities and communities for hubs to provide a range of services.
