Lambton Public Health to host workshops on youth substance use

A pair of workshops will be held by Lambton Public Health in the fall warning about the dangers of youth substance use.

The workshops will provide parents and caregivers with strategies to have meaningful conversations about the issue.

Steve Keller from Drug Free Kids Canada will be presenting at the two sessions.

Health Promotion Supervisor Donna Schmidtmeyer said the workshops will cover a number of topics.

"We'll be talking about substance use trends, they'll learn about how to have those conversations," she said.

Additionally, the workshops will arm parents and caregivers with tools to effectively discuss substance use with youth.

Schmidtmeyer said the overall goal would be to reduce the prevalence of youth using substances.

She said having workshops like this are important because of the use of substances among youth and the harms that go along with it.

"Youth need to have supportive adults who are able to provide helpful guidance," she said. "By knowing about the issues and the trends, being informed better prepares the individual to talk with the youth and encourage them."

The free workshops will be held in Sarnia at the Sarnia Library Theatre on September 24 and at the Forest Legion on September 26.

Doors open for both events open at 5:30 p.m. with presentations starting at 6 p.m.

There will also be various community organizations at the workshops with booths and resources.

"I think it's important that we learn about these things, so that we can have these conversations with youth," said Schmidtmeyer.

Those interested are required to register ahead of time.
