Boater charged after being rescued from Lake Huron

Lambton OPP say a boating rescue in Lake Huron last week has resulted in charges against a 29-year-old from Sarnia.

The OPP and Anishinabek Police Service (APS) responded to Bluepoint in Lambton Shores on Friday, July 26 at around 6:15 p.m.

They were told it was a "critical situation" as a boater had fallen overboard.

Police said thanks to the quick and heroic actions of a civilian, the individual was rescued and brought to shore before emergency services arrived on scene.

The civilian heard the "Mayday" call over the marine radio, spotted the boater in distress and immediately took-action, retrieving the individual from the water and bringing them to safety.

When police arrived, the boater received some medical attention, but no injuries were reported.

As a result of an investigation, the boater was charged with failure to have proof of competency on board a pleasure craft, and operating a vessel with safety equipment not in good working order.

Lambton OPP are extending gratitude to the quick-thinking civilian who played a pivotal role in the rescue.

Police are reminding all vessel operators to ensure they have the proper life saving equipment onboard, such as life jackets, as per the requirements of Transport Canada.
