Feds ratify tentative deal for CBSA employees

The Government of Canada has ratified a collective agreement reached earlier this month for the nation's border guards.

Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada and Customs and Immigration Union ratified the contract on July 5, averting a strike that threatened to cause significant delays at Canada's border crossings and airports.

The unions represent about 11,000 employees at the Canada Border Services Agency.

The agreement includes a wage increase of 12 per cent over four years and a 2.8 per cent adjustment recognizing the unique role of border workers. Employees will receive a one-time allowance of $2,500, while eligible ones will receive new Leave for Traditional Indigenous Practices.

"This agreement demonstrates that the best deals are reached at the bargaining table," said President of the Treasury Board Anita Anand. "Border services employees are critical to the safety and security of our borders, and this agreement recognizes their important work while ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent prudently."

PSAC National President Sharon DeSousa said the deal was possible thanks to the "unwavering commitment and solidarity" of its members.

Both sides will sign the agreement in the coming days, and employees will see wage and other enhancements on their pay stubs within agreed-to timelines.
