Aamjiwnaang marks Solidarity Day with celebration

Solidarity Day events, including fireworks at dusk, are planned at Aamjiwnaang First Nation on Friday, June 21.

There's a sunrise ceremony at 7 a.m., followed by the chief and council community breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

A youth fishing tournament is planned before noon, when a fry bread competition is scheduled to start.

There are a variety of events in the afternoon, including bingo, a dunk tank, tug of war, a baseball scrimmage, face painting and inflatables.

At 7:30 p.m. music and karaoke is planned and there will be fireworks at 10 p.m.

Most of the events are being held at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Community Centre and Bear Park.

Aamjiwnaang band buildings are closed for the day.

Youth volunteers practice coastal conservation

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
