Local MPPs address challenges facing Lambton County

Area MPPs were grilled on a number of issues by Lambton County councillors Wednesday in Wyoming.

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey and newly elected Lambton Kent Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault answered questions about overcrowded jails, INEOS, rural health care and the homelessness crisis.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley asked Bob Bailey to advocate for the municipality and others to push for a provincial plan to help address the homelessness crisis.

"On May 1, this council, Lambton County Council, sent a motion to the premier asking that the encampments be addressed as an urgent issue at the provincial level and bring all municipalities and public health units together to devise a comprehensive plan to address this issue," said Bradley.

The Sarnia-Lambton MPP agreed.

"I've already spoken to a number of my colleagues (including Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Michael Tibollo), MPPs and cabinet ministers as well," said Bailey. "This is an issue that's going across the province to some degree or another. It's only going to exacerbate itself and get worse as time goes on. So I see us, in my opinion...we need a provincial plan."

Warwick Township Mayor Todd Case asked MPP Pinsonneault to commit to a complete and thorough EA process, with no shortcuts, of Waste Management's proposed expansion project at the Twin Creeks Landfill in Watford.

He said he will be touring the facility next week.

"The province promotes good environmental planning, hence the reason we started the EA process" said Pinsonneault."The environmental assessment provides opportunity for the community's concerns to be heard and addressed, and once this process is complete the findings will be considered by the minister before making a final decision."

The project proposes an expansion at the existing site in order to increase the landfill airspace capacity.
