Grand Bend Beach highlighted as 'one of North America's finest beaches'

Two beaches and two marinas in Lambton County have retained their Blue Flag certification for the summer.

The international award, given to beaches and marinas that meet high environmental, safety and cleanliness standards, has been given to Canatara Beach in Sarnia, Grand Bend Beach, the Grand Bend Marina, and the Port Franks Marina.

Swim Drink Fish took over operating Blue Flag Canada, on behalf of Blue Flag International and the Foundation for Environmental Education, from Environmental Defence in early 2020.

The organization called Grand Bend Beach "one of North America's finest beaches" in its announcement of 2024 certifications.

"Grand Bend’s nearby shorelines boast one of the longest freshwater sand dune ecosystems in Canada and are leading the way in accessible and sustainable recreation and tourism," Swim Drink Fish stated. "In partnership with Lake Huron Coastal Centre, the municipality of Lambton Shores is leading the way in plastic and litter reduction through community-based cleanups and educational workshops underscoring the power of collaboration and the importance of working collectively in our efforts to protect the environment."

The Blue Flag Canada 2024 award was given to a total of 16 beaches and nine marinas.

Outside of Lambton County, the Port Stanley Main Beach, Port Burwell Municipal East Beach and Bluewater Marina in Bayfield were included in the list.
