Members of the Sarnia Police Service's first Auxiliary Policing Unit have officially been sworn in.
The officers are required to do eight to 12 hours of service a month and will be responsible for planning crime prevention initiatives and community events.
In a news release, Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis said during multiple public consultations in preparing the Sarnia Police Board’s 2023-2025 Strategic Plan, an Auxiliary Policing Unit was a community priority.
"This new volunteer unit will help greatly augment our operations, special events response, and increase our visibility in areas of need," said Davis. "The SPS Auxiliary Unit will be a valuable asset to our organization and we are excited to be able to deliver on this community expectation."
Sarnia police hope to recruit additional auxiliaries in 2025.
