Residents encouraged to clean up the community with annual event

The City of Sarnia is looking to get litter out of the environment and into the landfill.

The city will host its annual Community Clean-Up Day on April 20.

Community members are being invited to clean up the city's parks, trails, and green spaces.

Registration has opened for the event but will close at 12 p.m. on April 12.

Community Services Coordinator Rebecca Warren explained what people get when they register.

"When they register they can select the park or green space where they would like to clean up and then they can register to receive a clean-up kit," she said.

The clean-up kit will include garbage bags, gloves and a first aid kit.

Warren said in the past this event has been successful.

"We get a very good response from the community. Last year we had over 500 participants for 40 teams," she said.

Warren feels like an event like this is a great way to bring the community together.

She said it's also important to clean up spaces like the city's parks.

"As much as we try, litter does occur, so it's a great way to clean up those spaces and improve our environment and increase that community spirit," Warren said.

Anyone looking to register can do so online.

The clean-up will run from 10 a.m. until 12.p.m.

Earth Day this year is held on April 22.
