The Lambton Lions Women's Basketball Team was recognized for its historic season and made a special presentation to the city at Sarnia's Council meeting on Monday.
Lambton College President Rob Kardas said sports bring communities together like nothing else.
"We've seen it often at the national level when we cheer for our Olympic athletes, or at other events, but it's really special when it happens at the local level," Kardas said. "The support that this community has shown us has been amazing in terms of this recent run of our women's basketball team. No one cheers for the home team like Sarnia."
"You've seen that previously for our men's basketball team, you've seen it for the Sarnia Sting and now you've seen it for this amazing group of student athletes," Kardas added.
"As a sign of our gratitude, we'd like to present the City of Sarnia with an OCAA gold medal and a signed basketball from our group," he said.
The Lions advanced to win a silver medal at the CCAA Women's Basketball National Championships in Lloydminster, Alberta in mid-March.
The team fell just short and lost the final game to the Lakeland Rustlers 64-55.
