16th annual Race to Erase to support 10 initiatives

Organizers are hoping to see another successful fundraising year for the 16th annual Race to Erase.

Registration opened late last month, two months ahead of the scheduled event on May 25.

Executive Director Rich Bouchard said there's no fee to register but teams are asked to raise a minimum of $500 for the charity of their choosing.

"One hundred per cent of the funds received go to that chosen charity," he said. "Last year, for example, there were nine charities that participated and just under $41,000 was raised."

Of the 10 charitable recipients chosen this year, two are new.

Bouchard said Errol Road School is hoping to raise funds to update the school yard and replace the existing playground equipment, and YMCA Sarnia-Lambton is seeking support for ongoing operations.

Other charitable initiatives this year include The Inn of the Good Shepherd, The Women’s Interval Home, SWONT Conductive Education, River City Vineyard, Pathways Health Centre for Children, Literacy Lambton, St. Clair Child & Youth Services, and Sarnia-Lambton Rebound.

Bouchard said they generally see 40 to 50 teams of four sign up for Race to Erase. The event was launched in 2006.

"We've had to make some tweaks and changes since those early years but it really is the same kind of model that we've used from the get-go," he said. "Teams of four travel around to different locations in Sarnia-Lambton and they compete in fun-filled challenges."

Teams can register and learn more about the charitable initiatives through the Race to Erase website.
