Aamjiwnaang mourns respected elder

A former Aamjiwnaang First Nation band councillor is being remembered for his love of powwows and his commitment to improving the community.

Theodore "Ted" Earl White passed away peacefully at Vision Nursing Home on Thursday at the age of 83, read his obituary. 

Aamjiwnaang's band council issued a letter Friday afternoon to express condolences to the White family.

The letter from Chief Chris Plain and council members said White was the designated Eagle Staff Carrier and attended many gatherings throughout the years.

"[White] was also a well-known and respected member of the Powwow Circle, making friends all over Turtle Island," read the letter.

"A well-respected family man, [White] will be missed by many, and I want to express our appreciation to [White] and his legacy left as a hard-working proud community member who dedicated his life to his family, and the betterment of Aamjiwnaang in all he did." 

Family and friends will be received at White's daughter's home at 1078 Tashmoo Ave. on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. As stated in the obituary, a visitation will also be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the same location.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 12 at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Community and Youth Centre, located on Virgil Avenue. The service will start at 11 a.m.
