Sarnia police arrest hammer-wielding man

A Sarnia man is facing multiple charges including two counts of mischief under $5,000 and one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Sarnia police responded to a Murphy Road address on Friday for the report of a man wielding a hammer.

"While enroute, responding officers received additional information that the male had smashed out the glass of a bus shelter," police said in a release. "There were approximately 30 citizens waiting at the bus terminal as this incident occurred," the release continued.

No injuries were reported due to the incident.

The man was found quickly and arrested without incident.

Following the suspect's arrest, police were informed that the suspect had been involved in a separate incident earlier in the day.

According to police, the man followed a woman to her vehicle to a parking lot on Afton Drive and used the hammer to strike it repeatedly. She drove away but was reportedly chased by the suspect who was waving the hammer in the air.

The victim was not injured, but her vehicle had extensive damage.

A 29-year-old man attended a bail hearing via video on Saturday and will stay in police custody until his next court appearance on January 30.

Anyone with information about either of these incidents is asked to contact Sarnia police at 519-344-8861 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
