Old Colborne Road fire station demolished

Demolition began Wednesday on a piece of Sarnia's history.

Crews started tearing down the old Sarnia Fire Station No. 3 at Colborne Road and Michigan Avenue.

Firefighters were working out of the 70-year-old building until last week, when they moved into their shiny new fire station, located just a few feet away to the west of the old building.

The new fire hall is a significant upgrade compared to the original station, which opened in 1954.

It has been outfitted with the latest modern technology and includes equipment that ensures firefighters are properly decontaminated after responding to a call.

It will also accommodate a diverse workforce, with individual gender neutral washrooms.

The $7 million project faced material delays and labour shortages, which delayed the opening.

A grand opening is being planned for next week.
