Organizers of Aamjiwnaang's first Youth Symposium are hoping to create a sense of community and cultural engagement during an upcoming two-day event.
The symposium will be held on February 2 from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and on February 3 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The event, held at the Health Centre on Tashmoo Avenue, is geared toward youth between the ages of 12 and 21.
Children and Youth Services Supervisor Rachael Simon said the symposium will include guest speakers and various workshops.
"A lot of the programs are culturally based, so [we're] teaching about the big drum, we're actually going to make a big drum, we're doing teachings for the men and teachings for the women," she said. "We are doing caribou tufting, beading, we have some mental health and team building activities to do with them."
Simon said federal funding was received this year to support youth and community-based initiatives.
The symposium will end with a community feast and a round dance. Simon said the round dance will start at approximately 7 p.m. on February 3 and is open to members outside of the community as well.
