Hatchet wielding man arrested in downtown Sarnia

Sarnia police seized several weapons following an incident in the city's downtown Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to a call in the area of Christina and Davis streets for a man allegedly swinging a hatchet around in public.

Police said the man initially refused to comply with officers' demands as they attempted to de-escalate the situation.

It became apparent to officers that the accused was experiencing a mental health episode, and after a brief search he was arrested.

During the investigation, officers seized several knives, a pair of brass knuckles as well as the hatchet.

The man is charged with one count of possession of a dangerous weapon and three counts of possession of a prohibited weapon.

The man was held for bail and referred to mental health court.

Police said mental health courts are a key function of our judicial system as they ensure that each person going through the court process receives the appropriate support and services they need.

The objectives of mental health court are to improve the wellbeing and overall health of the person, improving community safety, reducing recidivism, and developing better access to mental health care and services.
