Sting start off 2024 with a 2-1 win over Peterborough

The Sarnia Sting defeated the visiting Peterborough Petes 2-1 Wednesday night at Progressive Auto Sales Arena, in front of over 4,000 fans for their first game of the new year.

Both Sarnia goals came in the first period by Marko Sikic and Andrew LeBlanc.

Assistant coach Dustin Jeffrey said the first period was probably one of their best in a long time.

"Every line, everybody rolled over and when you can sustain pressure and shots, you kind of take the energy out of the other team," said Jeffrey. "I think going to the start of the second period, we kind of let them get back a little bit. I think we gave them a little bit of energy, because if we came out the same way we started the first in the second, we could have really stepped on their throat."

Goalie Nick Surzycia made 29 saves in net to help extend the Sting's win streak to two.

The Sting are on the road Thursday night to visit the Barrie Colts.

Jeffrey said they try to focus on one game at a time.

"If we can focus on the first 20 minutes and come out like the way we did tonight, then we just build from there," he said. "I think if you look at the big picture, sometimes it gets overwhelming but if we can narrow it down to the first five minutes, first shift for each guy. When we play like that, that's how we have first periods like we did."

You can hear Thursday's game LIVE on CHOK (103.9FM/1070AM) with coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m.
