Despite festivities surrounding New Year's Eve, it was a relatively quiet night for police in Sarnia-Lambton.
On-duty officers with the Sarnia Police Service reported no significant events on December 31, 2023.
City police conducted a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) initiative and encountered no impaired drivers.
Area OPP also conducted 15 RIDE checks and there were no arrests for impaired driving.
During New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, Lambton OPP responded to 196 calls for service, most were minor.
The OPP Festive RIDE campaign ended on January 1, however, RIDE checks are carried out throughout the province year-round.
In a video posted to social media, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said this latest Festive RIDE campaign resulted in a total of 916 people charged with impaired driving, which is about 20 drivers per day.
"Just last week, from Christmas Day until New Year's Eve, the OPP laid 199 impaired driving charges, which is a 21 per cent increase over the same week last year," he said.
In total, OPP laid over 11,000 impaired driving charges in 2023.
