Trips to the World Series and the National League Championship Series in his first two years as manager have earned Rob Thomson a contract extension with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Corunna native has signed an extension to manage the Phillies through the 2025 season. The team announced the extension on Monday.
Thomson was poised to enter the final year of his contact this coming season, but after leading the Phillies to the playoffs again in 2023, it was expected that another extension was in the offing.
Thomson was promoted from bench coach to interim manager on June 3, 2022 when the Phillies fired manager Joe Giradi after a 22-29 start to the season. After Thomson took over, the Phillies went 65-46 and captured a National League wild card spot. Their playoff run took them to the World Series, where they lost in six games to the Houston Astros.
In 2023, Thomson led the Phillies to another playoff appearance and spot in the National League Championship Series. However, the Phillies lost in seven games to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Thomson, who had initially planned to retire at the end of the 2022 season before being names manager, told reporters at his end of season news conference that he would manage the Phillies as long as they would have him.
