Firefighters were called to the blaze on Scott Road near Williams Drive shortly after 6 p.m.
In a post to Facebook, Sarnia Fire and Rescue originally said the building was abandoned, however, the service now said it is still being used as a warehouse.
Fire Prevention Officer John Milne said damage is estimated at about $50,000.
No injuries were reported.
Alan Smith will begin his new role with the municipality on July 20.
