Red kettles out for the holiday season

Sarnia's Salvation Army is hoping to raise $165,000 during this year's Red Kettle campaign.

Capt. Brad Webster said the goal is slightly higher than last year's target of $160,000 due to an increase in need. Last year, over $169,000 was raised through the initiative.

"[The money] goes into such programs as our rental and utility assistance program, through our medical assistance program, any of the community programs that we offer is where this money goes back into," said Webster. "It comes in through the kettles and goes right into the community throughout the year."

This year's campaign officially launched last week. Webster said kettles will be out on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout the month of November.

Beginning in December, volunteers will be out Monday through Saturday up until December 23.

"You can find them at various locations around the community; one is Lambton Mall, Superstore, Canadian Tire, Walmart, Metro... just to name a few," Webster said. "All of our kettles this year will have the tip-tap option so you'll be able to tap a $5, $10, or $20 donation right at the kettle if you don't have cash."

Webster said the Salvation Army is always in need of volunteers to cover two-hour kettle shifts. Those interested can contact (548) 997-0750 or sasarniakettles@gmail.com
