Provincial police are investigating a suspected firearms smuggling incident in Port Lambton after 36 illegal weapons were recovered.
Members of the OPP Border Enforcement Security Task Force were notified of suspicious activity near Old River Road in the early morning hours of October 26.
Police said two people were seen travelling on a personal watercraft on the St. Clair River.
With help from members of Lambton OPP (Corunna Satellite Detachment), the OPP Canine Unit, the OPP Emergency Response Team, and Walpole Island police, several illegal firearms were seized.
However, the suspects and the watercraft were not found. It's believed the two people may have fled the area on foot.
"Illegal firearms pose a serious risk to public safety and are often used by organized crime groups, including street gangs, to commit violent crimes including theft, intimidation, extortion and homicide," said Detective Inspector Lee Fulford of the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau. "Any tip from the public, no matter how small, may be the missing piece that officers need to solve this investigation and to prevent future firearms smuggling incidents."
Investigators are asking for information from the public that may help identify the suspects and locate the watercraft.
