About 50 young people have registered for the inaugural Youth Engagement Summit in Petrolia, organized by the town's Youth Advisory Committee.
The event, also known as #YES, is being held on Saturday, October 14. Registration opened this past summer for youth between the ages of 12 and 18.
Director of Marketing, Arts, and Communications Laurissa Ellsworth said attendees will hear from guest speakers and take part in various activities.
"They also have the opportunity to meet and chat with vendors, people that are looking for student employees or volunteers, people who serve students [such as] local law enforcement and fire," she said.
Lunch will be provided.
Petrolia's Youth Advisory Committee is still relatively new, its first meeting was held in May. The group was established in order to get young people more involved in the community.
"We're really excited. I know council is delighted at the number of engaged young people - even on their social media networks and everywhere else," Ellsworth said. "They're very excited to see them out and participating in activities around the community and volunteering to take part. So it's been, so far, awesome for Petrolia."
Ellsworth said it's hoped word of mouth will spread after this weekend and more people will want to attend the youth summit next year.
