Lower goal a sign of the times for United Way

The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton has announced its target for the 2023 campaign.

Executive Director Dave Brown said the goal of $1.4 million is about what was raised last year, however the actual need is about $1.6 million.

"Once we hit that $1.4 million, we're going to keep fighting until we get closer to that $1.6 million level," said Brown.

Campaign Chair Vicky Ducharme said she can't remember a longer discussion than at the June Board Meeting deciding on the campaign goal this year.

"On the one hand, the board wanted to be realistic given the current economic environment with high-interest rates, higher than ideal inflation rates, and a community still feeling some lingering effects of the pandemic," said Ducharme. "But on the other hand, we know the needs are at that $1.6 million level or higher. Ultimately, we decided on a $1.4 million goal, but to take the opportunity to inform the community that the need is much higher. I am hopeful we will not only reach the goal, but we will work as hard as we can surpass it, knowing that every dollar over the goal raised this year will be used to invest in local programs and services."

It's the first time in roughly 12 years that the target has been below $1.5 million.

"We have struggled in the last couple of years with our campaign, as have a number of other charitable organizations and other United Ways," said Brown. "Largely it's been due to the COVID-19 pandemic and high inflation, however we have early indications that are positive this year and we're really excited going into this year's drive."

Brown said they've already raised $275,000 ahead of the official campaign kickoff on Tuesday, September 19 with the Day of Caring.

"Largely due to some of the event's that we already did such as the March Bagel Madness with the Bagel Factory and Thanks a Latte with Coffee Lodge," said Brown. "As well, we've got some early donations in from people that we've mailed to already. We do have about 3,500 letters that are going out this week, so we expect to have another boost leading into the campaign kickoff.

Also ahead of the Day of Caring is the annual Sarnia Sting Black and White inter-squad game on Thursday, August 31 at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton funds 17 local agencies providing over 31 programs and services.
