The North Lambton Community Health Centre (NLCHC) is hosting its first annual Migrant Worker Project (MWP) Cup Soccer Tournament on Sunday, August 20.
"We fully understand how important the migrant workers are to our community and the tournament is a great way for us to build that sense of belonging within the community that we all live and work in," said Health Promotion Team Lead Bel Jamieson. "We have seven teams total, five teams are our migrant workers who work on [local] farms and we also have two community teams."
Jamieson said the NLCHC is excited to showcase some of the workers' skills.
"They've been engaging in some recreation leagues in Sarnia and are very excited to have the event! I think it will be an amazing event with some talented folks participating," she said.
The tournament will be held at the Taxandria Soccer Club in Arkona. The opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. and the first game will likely kick off at 9:30 a.m.
"Everyone is welcome [at the free event] and we also have the Optimist Club of Forest which will be hosting the food booth at the event," she said. "We have door prizes that have been kindly donated by the community and OGVG (Ontario Greenhouse of Vegetable Growers) is one of our major sponsors of the event as well."
Local Olympian Tyler McGregor, captain of Canada's para ice hockey team, will also be at the event to coach the NLCHC team. He will also be on hand for the closing medal ceremony, along with Lambton Shores Mayor Doug Cook.
