No action from developers yet after surplus land hits market

There has yet to be a bite, as the City of Sarnia dangles 11.5-acres of land for sale in front of developers.

The property off Old London Road, within the Sarnia Business and Research Park, is owned by the city and was designated as surplus in June.

In the Spring, Mayor Mike Bradley said there was a "very interested/active party in that particular piece of land."

But, Communications Manager Steve Henschel said there have yet to be any inquiries or offers.

"At this point, no expressions have been submitted," said Henschel. "So, we're continuing to market the site through our Invest Sarnia website, our various marketing materials and through our site finder tool."

During his interview with Sarnia News Today, Henschel said it's still early.

"The process just started. [The public notice period] was 21 days from July 6, so on July 27 bids could start to be made and we just haven't received any yet. Again, it's a fairly large lot so we remain hopeful, but at this point nothing has been received."

Henschel said it will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

"It's currently zoned light industrial, so we are marketing it as such, that's what it's zoned for. Like any other property in the city, anyone is open to buy it. However, if you wanted to pursue another type of development there, they would have to go through the regular process of changing the zoning on the property and the city would be there to support them, should it be a legitimate request."

Any offers or expressions of interest will be reviewed by the City Solicitor before being brought to Sarnia council for consideration.
