Hundreds of ballplayers, aged 55 and up, will be in Sarnia this week for a cross-border baseball tournament.
The Good Neighbour's Game event has been alternating between destinations in Canada and the US for the past 22 years after originating down in Bonita Springs, Florida.
Organizer and local realtor Dearl Hill said it's put together by a group of competitive ballplayers down south who compete throughout the winter months.
"And once a year, they want to get together, there's about 300 of them that like to play somewhere else in the offseason," said Hill. "So we take turns from USA to Canada. Last year it was in Indiana, the year before it was in Kingston, so this year it's in Sarnia."
Hill said the event was hosted in Sarnia years ago, and over the years, it's been held in Camlachie and Oil Springs -- the last local tournament was held about 10 years ago.
Hill said they have 14 teams signed up to play at the Clearwater Diamonds.
"You can go watch the baseball games -- they play from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both Wednesday and Thursday," he said. "And there will be food trucks there and lots to watch."
Hill said they had a number of other events planned as well, including a golf tournament Tuesday.
"There's [also] 160 people going on the Duc d'Orleans cruise, and they're all staying in hotels," he said. "They come from Florida, all the way from British Columbia, the states, all over the place."
The event wraps up with a banquet dinner Thursday.
Hill said the event is good for local business.
"A lot of the restaurants are booked as far as food and bars, and it's brining a lot of business to town," he said. "But also recognizing how kind Sarnia is and how great a place it is to have this event."
Tourism Sarnia-Lambton the City of Sarnia have agreed to pay the diamond fees, plus insurance, for the tournament.
