A-maize-ing events planned for Watford Cornfest

Free hot buttered corn on the cob will be served in Watford all weekend long.

Cornfest kicks off Friday at 5 p.m. and continues through to Sunday.

Committee Member Mark Hamel said they'll have a good amount of corn ready.

"Thousands of dozens, there's a lot," Hamel laughed. "When it's free, people tend to eat a lot of it and we go through a lot of corn."

A scarecrow contest, youth games and activities in the East Lambton Community Complex (ELCC), and live music by Speed Wobble highlight events Friday.

Inflatables, obstacle challenges and other attractions, including face painting, will be set up Saturday.

An indoor vendor and craft sale is planned in the ELCC Saturday and children, and the young at heart, are invited to climb, learn and explore different trucks, vehicles and equipment at the ELCC track.

The Touch-A-Truck event is being held in memory of Jan Joosten, a Captain with the London Fire Department and volunteer with the Watford and Warwick Fire Departments. Joosten was also a member of the Watford Cornfest Committee, Watford/Alvinston Road Race Committee and was a Scout leader in Arkona.

"His son, Jake Joosten, is organizing that event and trying to raise a little bit of money for liver research," Hamel said.

The day ends with a dance in the ELCC on Saturday night.

Wrapping up the weekend, a free breakfast is planned Sunday and there will be a car show in the ELCC parking lot, a cornhole tournament and live music from NDR&C.

A two pitch tournament will be held throughout the weekend.
