Library hosts used book sale

Avid readers can stock up on materials during Lambton County Library's used book sale on Wednesday, July 26.

The annual event is being held at the Wyoming Fairgrounds from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m., or until supplies last.

The sale will feature a variety of books, audiobooks, and DVDs.

Technical Services Supervisor Brian Bowley said some materials from the 25 library branches are worn copies or are duplicates they would like to get rid of in order to make space for new titles.

"When titles have just been released, that's when the most interest in them is and then it kind of dies off, over generally a period of three to six months. Then, we may only keep a couple copies of generally nine to 12 copies we purchase sometimes for a really popular book," Bowley said.

Although this year's sale will have plenty of titles available, there will be a smaller selection compared to last year's book sale.

Bowley said there was a larger selection last year because they saved up copies due to not holding sales during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We had approximately 2,000 people last year. It was a huge crowd. I think it was due to some of the pandemic restrictions being lifted," said Bowley. "It was our first book sale in about 2.5 to three years. The book sales prior to that sale were popular, although not that popular, and I think there [were] just a lot of people who were excited to have the book sale back."

Adult titles will be sold for $1, and children's items will be priced at $0.50. Only cash will be accepted.

Shoppers can alternatively choose to fill their own standard-sized shopping bag for $5, with a limit of six bags per person.

"We want everything to be fair and we want everyone to get a shot at getting some good materials," said Bowley.

Proceeds from the sale will go toward the library's operating costs.
