A road rage incident in Sarnia's south end has led to charges against a 20-year-old city man, who police said had a toddler in the back seat.
On Tuesday, June 20, police said a woman driving a gold Toyota was travelling eastbound on Talfourd Street when a silver vehicle suddenly stopped in front of her and began reversing at a rapid pace.
Police said the victim recognized the accused. They said she couldn't avoid being hit, but was able to turn around and flee the scene.
It's alleged the suspect followed the victim, got beside her car, and sprayed what was believed to be bear spray through the passenger window.
Police said the victim turned down another street but was blocked by the suspect at an intersection.
It's alleged the accused then got out of his car, ran over to the passenger window and began spraying bear spray at a male passenger who was able to get out of the vehicle and flee on foot.
The female driver experienced difficulty breathing and a temporary loss of vision due to the spray, and students at a nearby elementary school were forced to stay indoors during the altercation.
Police said when they arrived the accused tried to act like he was the victim, but they were able to determine what really happened through eye witness accounts and physical evidence.
The suspect is charged with public mischief, operating a conveyance in a manner that was dangerous to the public, and two counts of assault with a weapon.
Police said he was also on a judicial release for trafficking controlled substances out of Lambton County.
The suspect's name was not released in order to protect the identity of the child.
He was released from custody after a bail court hearing on Wednesday.
