Ride of Respect honours frontline workers

You'll notice a large number of motorcycles across Sarnia-Lambton this weekend.

The fourth annual Ride of Respect is planned for Saturday through Sarnia, Bright's Grove, Wyoming, Petrolia and Corunna.

They'll also be passing by the childrens' memorial at Aamjiwnaang First Nation to pay tribute to the loss of Indigenous children and their families.

Founder and Organizer David Burrows said the inaugural event that took place in May 2020 had 125 motorcycles riding a 50 km route through the city to show respect to the frontline workers.

"Those were a couple of the longest weeks of our lives," said Burrows. "It was really to pay respect to workers in the medical field, and firefighters, police etc. We still include them but now it's really become a campaign to raise awareness that there are motorcycles on the road. We want everybody, including motorcycles, to respect the road and take the respect a little bit further and let's just respect everyone in the community."

Burrows encourages people to follow along with the ride.

"Keep an eye out," he said. "People, if they see us, are encouraged to take some pictures and some video and they can share it in our Facebook group 'Ride of Respect', we'd love to see them."

Donations will be collected from the riders and all proceeds will be presented to Ohana Landing.

The youth transitional housing facility in Sarnia was brought to the community by Tammy and Gary Vandenheuvel of Preferred Towing.

Riders will be meeting at 11 a.m. at Preferred Towing at 46 Indian Road South.

The ride gets underway at 12 noon, and will wrap up at the Moose Lodge with some entertainment and refreshments.
