BIGF hosts leisurely Slow Roll for all ages, skill sets

Local cycling enthusiasts are getting geared up for the second annual Bluewater International Granfondo Slow Roll.

The leisurely 10 kilometre ride takes place on Sunday afternoon. The family-friendly event is open to everyone regardless of age, experience, ability, or type of bike.

Slow Roll Chair Mike Hurry expects hundreds of cyclists to take part once again and said their safety is always the top priority.

"As with last year, we have a police escort," said Hurry. "So, we've got a few rules and regulations that we're asking people to abide by. Stay between the two police cruisers and stay on one side of the street so as not to annoy people driving their cars on the other side of the street. There will be live musicians along the route as well."

Hurry said the Slow Roll is quite the opposite of the Bluewater International Granfondo, which will be held August 6.

"The Granfondo is guys is spandex going on high-priced bikes as fast as they can," he said. "The Slow Roll is mom, dad, the kids, grandma and grandpa. We want to get everybody out on their bikes in cutoff shorts and t-shirts just to do a nice leisurely ride through Sarnia and Point Edward."

Sunday's event kicks off at 2 p.m. on Front St. between George and Nelson Streets.

Riders will then head up Venetian Blvd., under the Blue Water Bridge to Michigan Avenue, and loop back around Front Street, to St. Clair Street and Alexandra Avenue.

They'll come back down Venetian Blvd. before stopping for an after party at Centennial Park.

Hurry said there's also a mini two kilometre loop this year for those who aren't able to cycle the full 10 kilometres.

The event is sponsored by the nuSarnia Foundation and Back Home Coffee.
