Homeowners advised to prepare for summer storm season

The threat of summer thunderstorms and heavy downpours can lead to stress for many homeowners concerned about potential flooding.

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) is hosting a "Weathering the Storm" information session Wednesday evening in Petrolia.

General Manager Ken Phillips said staff will be providing practical solutions to storm-proofing your home ahead of the summer storm season.

"So we are seeing more intense rainfall events happening, and I know Petrolia has had some issues with overland flooding in urban areas recently," said Phillips. "So one of the things we wanted to do was just provide information to the public with regard to what they can do individually and on their own property, to help minimize potential damage as they possibly can."

Phillips said flooding is a growing concern across the province, not just in the St. Clair watershed.

"So we are at a time period where flooding has surpassed fire, nationally, as the greatest insurance issue," he said. "One of the things we're doing as an organization is just trying to make sure that people are understanding of what's happening with weather patterns, and what they can do, any programs that exist."

Wednesday's information session is being held in the Petrolia Town Hall lobby from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A formal presentation is planned for 7 p.m.

Phillips said the SCRCA is hoping to hold similar sessions.
