Sarnia walk raises funds for workplace tragedy supports

The 14th annual Steps for Life Sarnia fundraising walk will be held at Canatara Park Saturday morning.

Sarnia Chairman Mark Roehler said registration at the park will begin at 9 a.m. and the five kilometre walk will start from the Kiwanis Pavilion at 10 a.m.

He said the walk is the most important fundraising activity for Threads of Life, which is a national charitable organization that provides support for families affected by workplace fatalities, life-altering injuries, or occupational disease.

"Not only is it [held] to raise funds but also, it's there to raise awareness about Threads of Life and the support systems that are out there," he said.

As of May 1, the Sarnia event had raised over $11,000, or 74 per cent of its $15,000 goal.

"Our goal is to get 100 walkers," Roehler said.

The fundraiser was held in-person last year after being held virtually during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those who would still prefer to avoid crowds are welcome to participate virtually and make an online contribution during the month of May.

Registered participants will receive a T-shirt and refreshments. Roehler said there will also be a silent auction after the walk to help with fundraising efforts.

Pre-registration is encouraged and people can sign up for the event online up until Saturday morning.

This year marks Threads of Life's 20th anniversary overall as the organization was created in 2003.
