New museum program looks to restore historic machinery

The Lambton Heritage Museum has launched a program focused on antique machinery maintenance.

The program, Machinery Masterminds, will take place over the course of four sessions.

"Agriculture has been so important to the history of Lambton County for a long time and we have these wonderful agricultural artifacts here at the museum and we want to make sure that they are properly now and moving forward," said Curator/Supervisor Dana Thorne. "We're hoping to develop people with the skills to be able to help us with that."

Participants will work with staff member Jeremy Robson with a historic Rumely tractor by cleaning pistons, replacing gaskets, and changing the oil. The goal is for the tractor to be fully operational by the end of the program.

"He's been with the museum for almost 40 years now and he has so much information about our local agriculture, and about these artifacts, and he really has a lot to share and a lot to teach people," said Thorne.

Should the program go over well, Thorne said the museum hopes to hold another session in the fall with a focus on another piece of machinery.

Sessions will be held Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. until May 13.

Pre-registration is required by visiting the museum's website or calling (519) 243-2600. There is no cost to participate but attendees will be required to sign a volunteer agreement with the museum.
