Mental health supports a key part of St. Clair Child and Youth's Strategic Plan

St. Clair Child and Youth Services' new strategic plan sets out a roadmap for advancing mental health services for children and youth in Lambton County.

The plan was unveiled earlier this week.

Interim Executive Director Craig McKenzie said it also focuses on establishing a foundation of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

He said the plan is an important one, as we slowly come out of the COVID pandemic.

"We've seen a dramatic increase in the emergence of depression and anxiety, and some kids who are struggling to have their basic needs met," said McKenzie. "The economic situation as well has created a bit of a perfect storm. So, it really looks at how we can re-look at providing services in the community. As we look towards recovery from COVID, it is essential that we prioritize mental health care services and ensure that they are accessible to all who need them."

McKenzie said the organization is committed to promoting a healthy, supportive, and thriving workplace.

"This includes providing opportunities for professional development, promoting work-life balance, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect," he said.

McKenzie said St. Clair Child and Youth assisted 2,000 clients in 2022.

"That includes infants, children, youth and families," he said. "Things like mental health counselling, and prevention programs."

He said, in some cases, they work in collaboration with the Sarnia-Lambton Ontario Health Team and the Lambton Drug and Alcohol Strategy.

May 1 to 7 is Children’s Mental Health Week and St. Clair Child and Youth is celebrating with two key events.

A community BBQ is planned for Wednesday, May 3 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the agency located at 129 Kendall St. in Point Edward.

On Sunday, May 7, there's a 5K for the Kids run happening in Canatara Park.
