Pop Culture Show brings comics, costumes, video games to Sarnia

Comic books, collectibles, cosplay and more are coming to the Sarnia area this weekend.

The eighth annual Sarnia Pop Culture Show is set for April 16 at the Point Edward Arena.

Organizer Trent Rogers said there will be around 100 vendor tables.

"Featuring all kinds of things; comic books of course, games, toys, artwork, collectibles, handmade craft items and jewellery," he said. "Game demos, there's a photo booth, cosplay is a big part of it, people come in costume and pose for pictures with people who are dressed up, and we do this in conjunction with St. Clair Child and Youth Services, so they usually have activities for the kids and we do it as a fundraiser for them as well."

A portion of every ticket sold goes to the nonprofit.

Rogers said they're encouraging people to dress up, adding that it's something people love to do, especially in Sarnia.

"There's a really strong, passionate cosplay community," he said. "They work all year on their costumes to come to the show and show them off and that's one of the most fun aspects for us, especially with the kids; they love coming dressed up, it's another opportunity, other than Halloween, for them to put a costume on and be their favourite superhero."

Rogers said the first show, held in 2013, saw around 400 people attended, while recent events brought in around 800 people. He's hoping they can top 1,000 people this time around.

"Comic book conventions are something that my friends and I always travelled out of town to the larger cities for, like Toronto, Windsor, London, what have you, and at one point we just thought this is something that'd we like to try to do ourselves in Sarnia," he said.

Rogers also said that they'll have some special guests on hand.

"We're not at the point yet where we're attracting big celebrities, but we do always have some comic book artists from Ontario and Michigan, some people that have worked published by some of the larger companies, by Marvel, IDW, Archie Comics," he added.

The event goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 210 Monk Street. Tickets are $10 and kids 11 and under get in free.
