Aamjiwnaang artist's work featured in new JNAAG exhibit

An Anishinaabe member of Aamjiwnaang First Nation will have his artwork featured at the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery for about five months.

Curator Sonya Blazek said Nico Williams uses beadwork "to explore the intricate connections we have with objects, places and language."

Williams, now based out of Montreal, received a prestigious art fellowship in 2021.

He received the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art from Concordia University.

His first public sculpture, Monument to the Brave, was commissioned in 2020 and was displayed at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.

A selection of large-scale paintings from Ontario-based painter and printmaker John Hartman's portrait series will also be displayed.

Both exhibitions open on First Friday, April 14, and run until September 9.
