Teens encouraged to take 'Humans of Lambton' photos

Area teens are invited to "Take your Shot" in a local photography contest.

The Lambton County Library and Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery [JNAAG] are inviting submissions from teens, between the ages of 13 and 18, until July 9.

Public Services Coordinator for Youth Programs and Outreach Vanitia Campbell said "it's a fantastic opportunity for emerging artists to build their resume and portfolio.”

"We actually have the contest juried by industry professionals," said Campbell. "So, there will be a juror from the art gallery, Sonya Blazek, the curator of the art gallery, Richard Beland from Lambton College, who is the head of the photography program, and McKenna Dickey, who is a recent graduate of Lambton College's photography program."

She said they'll select winners in the different sub categories and the images will be included in an exhibit at JNAAG from August to October.

"This year's theme is 'Humans of Lambton.' So, we are asking our photographers to take pictures of people, with their permission of course. We want to make sure every photo subject is aware that their photo is being taken, and they've got permission to submit the photo from that subject," she added.

Couples and groups are the first subcategory.

"So, [we're] asking people to take photos of people in groups or couples, but creatively," Campbell said. "So, not just a rigidly posed pair of people standing in front of a wall, but get creative with how that photo is taken."

The next focuses on candid or environmental photos.

"This is taking photos of people doing things that they love. Inspired by their passions. Maybe it's your grandmother gardening, or your brother playing guitar, or something like that," she said.

Campbell said the final category is creative, fine art.

"Playing around with makeup, with costumes, with lighting, also with digital post production. So, get out Photoshop, or any other type of photo editing software, and play around with them," she said.

Each artist can submit up to five photographs online at lclibrary.ca/teenphotocontest before July 9.

Winning photos will be announced on Friday, July 21, 2023.
