Sarnia police officer faces criminal charges

A Sarnia police officer is facing criminal charges after being involved in "an off duty incident while operating a personal motor vehicle."

On Friday, Lambton OPP notified Sarnia police about charges against Cst. Sean Van Vlymen. Specific details were not released, and Sarnia News Today has reached out to the OPP for comment.

Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis issued the following statement.

"The Sarnia Police Service is committed to swiftly addressing any complaints and concerns within our lawfully available legal frameworks," said Davis. "It is deeply concerning when any police officers are involved in incidents that can negatively impact the public trust. This concern is shared by the many members of the Sarnia police, who continue to professionally serve the public every hour of every day, often in difficult and challenging circumstances."

Chief Davis said an internal investigation will be conducted pursuant to the Police Services Act (PSA).

Cst. Van Vlymen has been assigned to non-operational duties.
