Significant toll hike at Blue Water Bridge

Tolls at the Blue Water Bridge are going up next month.

Passenger vehicles entering the U.S. will pay $6 Canadian, an increase of $1.

In a news release, the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) said it is facing increased costs to maintain and operate critical international bridge infrastructure.

"It has substantially reduced revenue due to the slow recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic," read the news release. "Since 2020, the FBCL has depleted its reserves maintaining cross-border bridge access for critical goods while continuing to provide a safe and secure crossing for all bridge users."

Tolls for commercial vehicles heading stateside are also going up effective April 1, to $6 (CAD) per axle, an increase of $1.

The rate for motorists using the ConneXion prepaid program is going up by $0.25 to $4.50 (CAD).

"As the FBCL obtains the majority of its revenues from tolls to use the crossing, it must adjust the toll rates to fund future works."

Rates are reviewed semi-annually and the next review is scheduled for October 1, 2023.

The Blue Water Bridge has an average of 14,000 vehicle crossings per day.
