Sting crush Spirit 6-1 in Saginaw

The Sarnia Sting left Michigan with a convincing 6-1 win over the Saginaw Spirit Saturday night.

Ty Voit had a goal and two assists and was named the game's first star, Sasha Pastujov and Easton Wainwright each had a goal and an assist, and Sting netminder Nicholas Surzycia made 19 saves in the win.

Sarnia's Cooper Way opened the scoring at 9:10 of the first period, his 11th goal of the season. Just over two minutes later, Pastujov fired home his 31st goal on the campaign to give the Sting a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Wainwright increased Sarnia's lead to three at 1:48 of the middle frame, his ninth goal of the year. Voit, who's second in the OHL in points with 84, made it 4-0 at 4:31. Sting defenceman Ryan Mast got in on the scoring at 15:55, his sixth goal of the season and second in three games. The Spirit got on the board at 18:58 of the second to trim Sarnia's lead to 5-1 after two periods of play.

The Sting restored their five-goal lead at 3:51 of the of third period, a power play goal by Luca Del Bel Belluz, his 31st goal of the season. Surzycia had to make just four more saves the rest of the way to secure his 11th win of the year.

Due to a mechanical issue with the Sting's bus prior to puckdrop, Saturday night's game was delayed by an-hour-and-half and didn't get going until 8:40 p.m.  This means Sarnia's game against the visiting North Bay Battalion Sunday afternoon has been delayed and will begin at 4 p.m. rather 2 p.m. -- coverage on CHOK (103.9 FM/1070 AM) begins at 3:30 p.m.

Sarnia is now five points clear of Saginaw for third in the OHL's Western Conference with a month to go in the regular season.

The Sting have secured at least a point in six straight games, going 4-0-1-1 during that span.
