Baby pigs perish in large barn fire outside Alvinston

Damage is estimated at north of half-a-million dollars in a large barn fire outside Alvinston Sunday afternoon.

Brooke Fire Rescue, along with crews from Watford and Oil Springs, responded to the 2700 block of Old Walnut Road at around 4:20 p.m. and they didn't leave until about 9:30 p.m.

Fire Chief Steve Knight said the cause is under investigation.

"It's difficult, with the amount of damage that was done while we were putting the fire out, to determine it. So, there's a possibility of an electrical fire but it's undetermined," said Knight. "It was a large-loss fire which means it was over $500,000 [in damage], so we're still working on the cost for it."

Knight said no injuries were reported and that most of the animals in the barn made it out safely.

"No personal injuries. There were a few baby pigs that perished," he said. "Prior to our arrival, the neighbours and the family had done an excellent job of clearing the barn. There was cattle under the adjacent barn as well, so they cleared all of the animals out, pretty much, prior to us getting there."

Knight said the community that was involved did an amazing job.

"The family and friends and the landowner were just incredible and they all came together to help out."

The Ontario Fire Marshal was contacted about the blaze.
