Planning continues on Sarnia's largest greenfield area

A preliminary plan for Development Area 2 (DA2) in Sarnia is still being reviewed following months of consultations.

Surveys and meetings were held last year regarding Sarnia's largest greenfield area, identified largely for residential development. The space is 570 hectares and is located between Modeland Road, London Line, Blackwell Sideroad, and the CN Rail yard.

Manager of Planning and Development Services Eric Hyatt said no draft plans have been finalized yet.

A preferred preliminary plan was publicly presented during an information session in November 2021 and work is being done based on feedback received.

"I think it was received relatively well. It had gone through two other consolations prior to that being prepared so it did consider the feedback that was presented at those other opportunities in terms of developing it," he said.

"[There's] no specific date in terms of presenting it to council at this point. Right now, we're just kind of working through feedback from that public information session -- That was the first time the preferred preliminary plan was presented."

Hyatt said consultations involved stakeholders, as well as organizations like the Ministry of Transportation, the conservation authority, and area school boards.

He said and there appears to be a continued interest with respect to development in the area.

"It ultimately is the next area for development in the City of Sarnia as we're really just looking to modernize that development framework to incentivize development out there, as well as align our development with the recently adopted Official Plan," he said.

An update is expected to be provided in the spring.
