Two individuals from Brampton face drug importation and possession charges after close to 90 bricks of suspected cocaine were seized at the Blue Water Bridge late last year.
The Canada Border Services Agency [CBSA] and Royal Canadian Mounted Police [RCMP] issued a joint news release Wednesday, detailing the December 11, 2022 incident.
The agencies said a commercial truck was referred for a secondary examination when it entered Canada.
Border services officers discovered 89 bricks of suspected cocaine, weighing approximately 100 kilograms, during the inspection of the trailer.
The narcotics were seized and CBSA officers arrested the driver and passenger.
The RCMP took custody of the evidence and formally charged Vikram Dutta, 44, and Gurinder Singh, 61, with importation of cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Canada's Minister of Public Safety, Marco Mendicino, commended the organizations for the bust.
"The safety and security of Canadians is our government’s top priority," said Mendicino. "I want to thank the dedicated CBSA and RCMP officers for their excellent work in stopping dangerous narcotics from coming into the country. I had the opportunity to see these efforts first hand during my visit to the Blue Water Bridge last month, and I look forward to seeing the difference they continue to make in keeping our communities safe.”
The matter is currently before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia.
